Our Democracy is Failing

For those who do not know me, let me tell you this: I have been a fiscally conservative Republican who has never voted Democrat in a general election. I supported Bernie Sanders in the primaries, but I did not vote for Hillary Clinton. But I can no longer sit by the sidelines and watch our country fail. We are at an important juncture in US history and must act to ensure the future of our democracy. Our children will judge us by what we do right here and right now—and we must start with the midterm election in the state of Texas.

We have an authoritarian president who does not believe in the rule of law, basic human rights, or our Constitution. We have a corrupt political system where mainstream media, big business and politicians suppress change and promote the status quo. We are constantly deceived and manipulated by BOTH Democratic and Republican parties (duopoly) such that WE ARE AT RISK OF LOSING OUR DEMOCRACY!

Trump has hijacked the Republican Party and made it the party of big business and white supremacy—with no sense of family values—and most Democrats are no better. Most Democrats would rather make peace with the Republican Party and keep favor with their donors than challenge them in any meaningful way. 

For example, they had the opportunity with DACA but preferred to ensure their donors receive a big tax cut. (For those who need a biblical reference: “Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.” 1 Thessalonians 5:15)

But under Trump, the Republican Party has really lost its way and Ted Cruz has done nothing to save it.

Let me tell you about Beto O’Rourke, a Democrat, running for US Senate. Beto will not take money from corporate PACS and special interests. He has listened to people and spoken at EVERY COUNTY IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. He has grown a strong grass-roots campaign of both Democratic and Republican voters. He simply represents us. And he is raising the type of money needed to beat Ted Cruz.

Ted Cruz will fall in line with Trump’s racist agenda and pay lip service to the religious right. He will vote along partisan lines so we don’t pass guns laws, take on the high cost of healthcare, or pass meaningful and fair immigration reform. He will keep money in politics because that is his true base. Those are his constituents—not you or me. Just like Trump, he is a danger to our democracy. If Beto O’Rourke defeats Ted Cruz and becomes the 51st Democratic Senator, something I think is entirely possible, it will send shock waves throughout the political system. It will be the catalyst we need to turn our country around.

There are three reasons I think this is possible: 1) Texas demographics are changing. Many liberal people are moving into the state. 2) Look at the activism and all the marches. We have had marches and demonstrations for science, woman’s rights, gun control, and anti-white supremacy. 3) We have an amazing person, Beto O’Rourke, running for Senate. He is a smart, articulate, and uncorrupted Congressman from El Paso. He knows first-hand that a wall will not fix immigration.

But this fight won’t be easy. Ted has raised $100,000’s from gun manufacturers. He is backed by wealthy donors like the Koch brothers. The Koch brothers are rich oil barons who benefited from Republican tax cuts and know climate change as fact. But now since green energy is a serious threat, they are dealing in propaganda to confuse the issue and keep the status quo. They are also pouring money in to defeat and slander Beto. 

If you still think Trump, Ted Cruz, or the Republican Party represents you and cares about this country, please don’t try to persuade me I’m wrong. Go volunteer for Ted Cruz! But good luck trying to attend one of his town halls. They are not open to anyone like Beto’s are. I tried to go to one. They are tightly controlled.

I understand some may be angry with this post. But why not go and see Beto and decide for yourself? Beto will be in Plano this Sunday June 24 with many other North Dallas Events schedule this summer. Why not go listen to what he says? If you disagree with him, TELL HIM. Unlike Cruz, he will let you in and he will listen to you.
